My journey with Portuguese began unexpectedly in 2018 when I chose to be an exchange student in Brazil with the Rotary Club of Harrisburg. Intrigued by the allure of Brazilian culture, I embarked on this adventure, unaware of the linguistic challenge that lay ahead.
Before setting foot in my host country, I sought help from tutors, grasping only basic phrases like "Olá" and "Tudo bem" (hello and how are you). However, it wasn't until three months into my program that I began to gain confidence in communication.
As an exchange student, I was blessed with opportunities for extensive travel, including a mesmerizing month-long journey along the northeast coast of Brazil, from Jericoacoara to Rio de Janeiro. It was in Rio where I encountered fellow Americans boasting about their alma mater, Penn State. Inspired by their experiences, I resolved to pursue my education there, drawn not only by academic opportunities but also by the prospect of reconnecting with Brazil.
Another unforgettable chapter of my journey was a nine-day expedition into the Amazon rainforest, where I was deeply moved by the beauty of the forest and the vibrant culture thriving beneath its canopy. During my time in Brazil, my interests shifted toward language, culture, and environmental studies, ultimately shaping my decision to major in Global and International Studies at Penn State.
At Penn State, I found myself immersed in a vibrant Portuguese program led by remarkable mentors like Professor Dayse Bede. Through her guidance, I delved into a bilingual podcast project, Brazil Culture Connections, working with a post-doctoral student, Jamie Lee Andreson collaborating with Brazilian artists to showcase their work to a wider audience.
In my third year, I seized the opportunity to study abroad in Lisbon, Portugal, a program with CIEE, a pivotal experience that broadened my understanding of Lusophone culture. This semester abroad not only fulfilled the requirements for my Portuguese minor but also laid the groundwork for future endeavors.
Following graduation with a BA in Global and International Studies and minors in Portuguese, Sustainability, Leadership, and International Agriculture, I embark on a new chapter as a graduate research assistant at Florida Gulf Coast University. Empowered by my diverse background, I am dedicated to making a positive impact through rigorous research and advocacy for agricultural sustainability.
My journey may not have followed the conventional path, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Equipped with a passion for learning and a global perspective, I am ready to engage in meaningful conversations and contribute to positive change in the world.
In embracing the uncommon language of Portuguese, I have unlocked doors to a world of possibilities, enriching my education, and shaping my future in ways I could never have imagined.
